Is this the future of the slam dunk contest?

Most definitely yes. Money has become more important over the years, and big companies like Gatorade and upcoming Under Armour will try to get 'their share' of the profits. Sprite and Kia and also T-Mobile have been sponsoring the NBA for years. It is only logically to think that more will try to get a role in the NBA and other sports.
