What are the best fish to stock in a ten gallon tank?

I have no experience with fish, but I'd like to get a ten gallon fish tank. I'd really appreciate any suggestions about how many and what type of fish to get. I'd like easy to care for fish that are freshwater dwelling and readily available. If possible, I'd like fish that can happily survive and thrive with out a heater or filtration (just weekly or so tank cleanings). Having never had fish before, I don't want to overcrowd the fish. I also don't know what type of fish get along with others. Additionally, I'd like to avoid mating (because I wouldn't have the space for more baby fish), so what type and number of same gender fish get along in a ten gallon tank?
