Catholics who are Democrats....?

I'm just curious....why is it that the Catholic faith strongly opposes ity and abortion, yet it's membership is predominantly Democratic whose ideology supports both Abortion rights and Gay rights? In other words how can a Catholic be a Democrat? I'm not saying all Catholics are Democrats...just asking about those who are.
