What is your opinion on the treatment of racers after they finish their racing career?

i mean, i went to a lady's place yesterday and she had this really nice throughbred (4)who had spent four weeks OTT, and he was the most kindhearted AND quiet little stally(he is getting gelded this wkend so dont go all "HE SHOULD BE GELDED!WE ALREADY HAVE TOO MANY HORSES IN THE WORLD!"rarara.) apparently he had an accident in the gates (coz of one of the others)and he threw his head up and skinned his forehead and (he now has this lump on his forehead) and they were going to put a bullet in him the next day before they even got a vet to him. long story short, she bought him for $50 and she got a vet to him pronto. it was only a superficial graze and now he is fine. they didnt even bother to take his racing plates off before they were going to bullet him! anyway, to the question. what is your opinion on the treatment of OTTBs once they are off the track? these lovely horses have just won them stacks of cash, and what do they do? they either get dumped in a paddock afte being stabled
