Beginner photography question: Can you shoot with low aperture while keeping the photo dark?

Since you are trying to shoot with a wider aperture, you would also need to increase your shutter speed and/or lower your ISO to maintain a proper exposure. Use your camera's light meter to coordinate those 3 factors.
